The List: Spring Travel Style
One of the many reasons I love to travel is because it allows me to curate a definitive look and style personality depending on my destination. It’s the ultimate playing-dress-up opportunity, precisely because you are not beholden to (read: overwhelmed by) the entirety of your at-home wardrobe. Packing for a trip gives everyone the opportunity to be a fashion editor and a personal stylist. Even better, the “client” is YOU!
So while there are certain basics that every woman should have on her permanent travel checklist -- cashmere travel blanket and sleep mask; slip-on shoes or sandals to breeze through airport security; lightweight robe and slippers; luggage that satisfies both form and function – I use the Filson twill collection in Otter Green for checked baggage and my Louis Vuitton duffel or roller bag for carry-on -- the next time you plan your escape, instead of bemoaning the packing process, put on your fashion editor hat and create your very own editorial feature. Consider your destination, choose your color scheme and desired look, put all of your outfit options (including accessories) on your bed, and then edit, edit, edit. No need to over-pack when you carefully curate. And of course, always leave room in your suitcase for the spoils you will surely bring home.
For this travel-focused version of The List (a regular feature on Anchors & Sirens showcasing the five pieces I’m currently obsessed with) I was inspired by one of the most spectacular destinations I have ever visited – the luxurious Jade Mountain Resort in St. Lucia. I followed my own packing recommendations above, and here is a capsule collection of my go-to spring travel wardrobe (maillot or bikini of choice is an obvious addition).
1. Dodo Bar Or dress, $388
I love the slew of dramatic, flowing, BoHo maxi dresses available this season, and this design by Dodo Bar Or is one of my favorites. The graphic black and white pattern gives it an exotic yet still city-centric flair (making it appropriate for both the island of St. Lucia and the island of Manhattan); plus the fact that it’s cotton makes it casual enough for an afternoon excursion, yet the striking silhouette makes it glam enough for an evening soiree.
2. Have Some Fun Today Luxe Tote, $320
Every chic traveler needs a whimsical tote. They pack flat (or you can carry it on), and you will use it every day, whether poolside or hitting the local markets. The uplifting message on this bag makes me happy, it embodies the sense of adventure I strive for when traveling, and it’s sure to be a conversation starter. Plus, I love supporting emerging brands, and Have Some Fun Today is definitely one to keep on your radar.
3. Nikon AW1 Camera, $799.95
While Smartphones are great for quick social snaps, the resolution for photo prints – and blog posts – is never high enough. This Nikon camera is at the top of my must-have list because it is waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof (which means it’s also Katrina-proof), and it has a built-in GPS that lets you geotag images and videos. And, how cool is it in white? Hello perfect camera!!
4. Stuart Weitzman ROMANFLAT suede sandals, $445
This is the ultimate summer sandal, with its deconstructed gladiator vibe, delicate ankle wrap detail and open silhouette. Pair with your Dodo Bar Or maxi dress, cut-off shorts, or an embroidered tunic minidress. Just don’t wear them to the airport – the non-TSA-friendly lace-up situation makes them a pack-only item.
5. Krewe du Optic Louisa Interstellar 24k sunglasses, $220
If I could buy every pair of Krewe du Optic sunglasses, I would. So far I only have one pair with prescription lenses (for reading on the beach, obviously). Every pair is handmade in New Orleans, and the quality and craftsmanship is top notch. All sunglasses have 100% UVA/UVB protection, a lifetime warranty and are Rx-ready.
